2016 Finalists

Tom BLACHFORD

Artist statement: My art explores the ability of the camera to augment human perception. I am fascinated by the ability of the lens and sensor to distort scale, time and perspective. Using modern technology I seek to find ways to freeze or expose phenomenon that we experience fleetingly or that we are unable to process fully.

Capturing the images just beyond the limits of our perception is my primary interest. Working in a documentary style I seek to distill these moments to allow them to be viewed and analysed.

This series, Midnight modern focuses on the milieu of Palm Springs California, shot using only the light of the full moon between the hours of 8 pm and 5 am.
