INTRODUCTION
The Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) invites photographers to submit works in competition for the William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize 2008, to be awarded to the most outstanding photographic work as determined by the selection panel.
The William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize was initiated by the MGA Foundation in 2006. Established to promote excellence in photography, the Prize and exhibition will provide an opportunity to view and engage with some of the most interesting contemporary work produced over the past year.
All entries will be assessed by a selection panel comprising:

Tony Ellwood, Director, Queensland Art Gallery, GOMA
Rosemary Laing, artist
The winner will be announced on Wednesday 03 September, 2008 and finalists’ works will be exhibited in the accompanying exhibition from Saturday

ELIGIBILITY
1. Entries for the William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize 2008 will be considered from still photo-based media including analogue and digital photography.
2. An entry must not exceed (h) 200.0 cm x (w) 250.0 cm (including frame).
3. Multi–panel works may be accepted where their dimensions do not exceed the specified dimensions in total. A multi-panelled work is considered as one work and to be eligible for selection must be shown in its entirety in one digital image.
4. Work/s must have been produced in the 12 months prior to 30 May, 2008.
5. Employees of the MGA, the City of Monash, or members of the MGA Committee of Management, the MGA Foundation, or the organisers and members of their immediate families are ineligible to enter.
6. Entrants must be over 18 years of age as of 30 May, 2008, and be a resident of Australia.
ENTRY
7. The selection of finalists is judged in digital form only. Judges will select one work only for exhibition from each chosen finalist. Photographs, photocopied reproductions, emailed images, slides or any other representation of work will not be accepted for the selection process.
8. Entrants must submit:
• up to 5 digital images on CD.
Images must be saved as jpeg files of approximately 2Mb, at 300dpi and able to be opened on PC format.
Jpegs must be saved with the following file name format:
artist’s surname_artist’s first initial_image#(1,2,3,4 or 5).jpg eg. smith_j_1.jpg
Jpeg file names must correspond with entry details listed on the Entry Form
• a completed Entry Form
• a CV (1 page maximum)
• an entry fee of $50 (including GST).
Entries must arrive at the MGA by 5:00pm on Friday 30 May, 2008.
9. Entry fee is $50 per artist. The entry fee is non-refundable and covers administration, handling and the return of materials. Any entry not accompanied with payment of the entry fee will be deemed ineligible.
10. Payment of the entry fee may be made by cheque to Monash Gallery of Art or credit card (see over for payment form). Receipts will be mailed.
11. Envelopes must be addressed to: The William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize 2008, Monash Gallery of Art, 860 Ferntree Gully Road, Wheelers Hill, Victoria 3150.
12. Emailed entries will not be accepted.
EXHIBITION AND JUDGING
13. A shortlist of finalists will be advised by Friday 11 July, 2008 and will be required to send or deliver their original work to the MGA by 4:00pm Friday 08 August 2008. Successful applicants will be telephoned and notified in writing. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified by letter.
14. Works selected for exhibition must be ready for installation. All elements required to install the work must be supplied.
15. All entries accepted for exhibition must be available for continuous display at the MGA throughout the period of the exhibition.
16. Selected works will not be available for sale throughout the exhibition.
17. The judges’ decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
18. The judges will award a cash prize of $15,000 for the winning work.
19. The entrant must consent to the MGA reproducing the entered work in all publicity
and promotion of the Prize, including all electronic/digital or print media, subject to the MGA’s discretion.
20. Final judging will take place once the works have been installed. The winner will be announced on Wednesday 03 September, 2008
21. The judges reserve the right not to exhibit any work if the work is not, in their opinion of sufficient artistic merit, technical and formal resolution, or framed/presented appropriately. The MGA has the right to refuse to display any entry.
FREIGHT AND INSURANCE
22. The MGA will not be responsible for any loss or damage whatsoever or however caused, to any work while in transit to and from the Gallery. All works will be condition reported on arrival at the MGA. Any damage in transit will be immediately reported to the artist. The work is insured, at the entrants’s nominated insurance value, whilst in-situ at the Gallery.
23. Delivery and return freight will be at no cost to the MGA.
24. If an artist fails to remove a work from the MGA within one month of the close of the exhibition, the MGA will follow the following procedure. After sending a notice by post to the artist at the last known address of its intention to dispose of the work, the Gallery may then destroy or otherwise dispose of the work in such a manner as it may deem fit. Thereafter the Gallery shall be under no liability to the artist in respect of any work so destroyed or disposed of.

25. All personal information gathered by the MGA will be used solely for the purpose
of administering the William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize 2008.
