Complex

Monash Gallery of Art is situated on a parkland affording spectacular views of Melbourne's south-east. We acknowledge the traditional owners of this beautiful place and pay our respects to their elders both past and present.

The gallery was designed in the 1970s by the famous Australian architect Harry Seidler (1923-2006). The gallery is situated on the crest of Wheelers Hill, and offers commanding views of the Dandenong Ranges to Melbourne's east. The gallery sits beside the Wheelers Hill Library and is surrounded by a picturesque garden and sculpture park.

Seidler also designed the Waverley Civic Centre (1982-84; now the Monash City Council), at nearby Glen Waverley. For the Wheelers Hill site, he had originally planned a vast cultural precinct: the gallery was intended to sit alongside a performing arts centre, sculpture park and library. The site would become the cultural centrepiece of Melbourne's expanding south-eastern suburbs, and would take its place alongside the monumental football ground VFL Park, built at nearby Mulgrave.

MGA is the only Seidler-designed art gallery to be built. With its wave-like roof, curved walls and vast galleries, MGA is a striking example of Seidler's work. (More information on the work of Seidler can be found here and here)
