Simon AUBOR

Artist statement: Family records is an ongoing series that investigates my family’s migration to Australia after World War II and how culture and traditions shift through context. Explored through my eyes as a first-generation Australian secular Jew, the process of documentation (archiving of culture) serves to capture moments in time, traditions and rituals that continue to move, shift and fade. ‘Gefilte fish Dad’ was taken during this year’s family Pesach dinner and captures my father holding traditional unleavened bread called matzo, with a serving of beetroot horseradish, gefilte fish and a pickle. These dishes have been served in my family for generations for both religious reasons and to connect with family, culture and heritage.
