Danica CHAPPELL

Artist statement: The photogram is perhaps considered ‘standard grammar’ for the cameraless photograph, yet its plasticity is infinite. Witnessed by finger-tip, latently composed shadows of staged actions and intimate contact between objects, shape monologues of form that wait to be fixed. Geometries and shifting densities open a multitude of possibilities in this application that appeals to the bond I have with photography.

Coupling the daguerreotype with the photogram propositions photography’s lineage. The active viewing surface of the silvered copper plates become a photo-object, vacillate between a positive and negative form. Acquiring a discourse, ‘Glimmer (working title for picturing objects)’ is a constructed body from a compilation of history unburdened by convention.  A still life dislocated from its material appearance, encapsulating an accumulation in its slippery shadowy trace.
