Leith ALEXANDER

Artist statement: Savanna and Bucanyon are rouseabouts and sheep shearers in Western Australia.

Savanna: ‘My dad had me by his side in the sheds since I can remember. I love it because it frees my mind from the things I don’t like to think about. It makes me feel at home.’

Bucanyon: ‘I’ve been in the sheds since I was 13; my papa, Tuta Wilke gave me my first job rousing. Ever since I’ve just travelled around. I love the people you meet and the atmosphere. Everyone works as a team and you’re taught old school ways; like be the hardest worker in the shed.’

On smoko, Canyon lifts her singlet to silence the men who’re teasing her about having her portrait taken.
