2020 Finalists

Petrina HICKS

Artist statement: From the witch trials of the early modern period to the current popularity and commodification of all things witchery, we have seen an evolution in the witch archetype.

Today the witch archetype is synonymous with feminism and seen as a symbol of empowerment.

The suffragists were the first to reclaim Joan of Arc as a symbol of female power and were instrumental in reframing the witch archetype.

Despite these evolutions powerful women in politics have been depicted as witches in a derogatory manner in recent decades.

Joan of Arc is rising from the ashes to question how much has changed today?
