2022 Finalists

Danie MELLOR

Artist statement: ‘The far country’ is a piece that acknowledges the rich cultural traditions connected with Country and the history of photographic images that helped to shape the development of Australian colonial and settler identity. By combining archival and recent infra-red imagery of Din Din (Barron Falls) and rainforest imagery, the work relays the complexity of historical narratives bound up with belonging, invasion, Dreaming and place. The haunting quality of the imagery suggests storylines that are embedded through a sense of place, in which the contradictions of beauty and violence are present.
