BRIDGEMAN & COOK

Yuriyal Eric BRIDGEMAN and Ben COOK

Artist statement: The feathers of the muruk (cassowary) hold special significance where I come from, the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Shaking with each turn of the head, we wear our bilas as crowns for ceremony and dance, and beautify our shields with plumes. I have dwelled in my painting studio for the past two years with my shields, thinking of peles (place, where I’m from). I invited photographer Ben Cook to create this portrait with me after the Queensland floods, where this connection to my ancestry had survived.
