2022 Finalists

Artist statement: ‘Manta miil-miilpa (sacred earth)’ has a complex and intertwined relationship with the spirit of the land.

My work responds to the natural elements to create an expressive underpainting of colour in a dance between myself and the country upon which I work. The paper accumulates marks, documenting a fleeting moment of existence while the aura of colour explores the eternal presence of Tjukurpa and my ancestors’ spirits. Once these ‘ephemeral frottages’ are complete, I photograph the landscape, and using a UV sensitive dye, expose the image onto the paper. Both contact and exposure are different for every work as the natural elements inevitably control several variables. Finally, the exposures are cleaned and developed in a water of the land and left to dry.
