Ponch HAWKES

Artist statement: ‘I wanna walk though the park in the dark’ (lyric from 'Nameless, faceless' by Courtney Barnett)

This work began from thinking about how restricted women are in their use of public spaces, and how hard it is for women to feel they have safe passage in the world.

Two weeks after the work was finished, I found myself attending a vigil in Princes Park in honour of Eurydice Dixon, who had been raped and murdered in that public space just five nights earlier.
