2018 Finalists

Leah KING-SMITH

Artist statement: My use of camera, mirror, scanner and photo-editor allows me to engage with themes of simultaneity and multi-temporal perception through the associative play of moments and places woven together. This work depicts a photograph of my mother, Pearl King, with my brother Wayne – her first child. The original was taken by my father, Tom King, in basic housing that had been erected for US troops in Brisbane and abandoned at the end of the war. In my ‘retelling’ of this portrait, I have simultaneously placed mum and her baby in the context of her ancestral country, Bigambul.
