Polixeni PAPAPETROU

Artist statement: Polixeni Papapetrou’s work explores the relationship between history, contemporary culture, identity and being. In the artist’s final series, My heart – still full of her, Papapetrou reflects on mortality, prompted by her own experience of terminal illness. The images in the series are self-portraits taken by the artist throughout her life, with the images re-worked from negatives dating back 30 years. This process of reactivating negatives and presenting them as large-scale and complex silver-foil silkscreens, shows an active engagement and interrogation of the photographic medium. These portraits were the first and only time Papapetrou presented herself as the subject.

Papapetrou passed away on 11 April 2018 at age 57.
