Artist statement: This country is changing, but its symbols are not. What is it to be Australian today? The long, dominant strain of historical and colonially-inflected national mythmaking, grows further out of step with our increasingly diverse, modern society. Concerned with notions of identity and place, Aporia explores a complicated constellation of gender, class and race. Spanning the iconic spaces of domestic Australian life, the series reflects on a febrile mix of histories and ideologies as it navigates the continent and ideas of ‘Australianness’ today.
