2018 Finalists

Samuel SZWARCBORD

Artist statement: Exquisite corpse was a parlour game played by the Surrealists, whereby each artist would draw a section of an illustration – often a figure – then fold the paper to conceal their work before the next artist drew another portion. This work takes ready-made Exquisite corpses by capturing screenshots from the gay dating app Grindr when users’ profile pictures align in the grid. The contrast between the heads and torsos, along with the variety of profile names, exposes the different motivations and the varied approaches of men using the app. The work finds humour in the display of headless torsos to attract other men, and the dedication it takes to refine the musculature for this competitive display of flesh.
