Justine VARGA

Artist statement: My photography comprises an intimate exchange between a strip of film and the world that comes to be inscribed on it. ‘Scale’ records a repetitive domestic activity, with a piece of film registering the wetting, receding and drying of hard water on a London kitchen bench; a month-long process that left a residue of lime-scale on the film’s surface. After processing the negative in the darkroom it was transformed into an immersive photograph; a memorial to my day-to-day existence, exhibiting a chromatic wound within the soft flesh of the emulsion. Simultaneously situational and autobiographical while complicating both the act of looking and the experience of time, this photograph appears to be abstract, but is in fact a rigorous distillation of lived reality.
