Artist statement: This image, from the series A Lake, a forest and the dark voice of the sea seeks to express a sense of the sea’s materiality and its disquieting presence.
For this reason ‘A dark voice of the sea #1’ subverts the conventional pictorial ‘seascape’ and invites us to contemplate the possibility of its total embrace.
As a timeless metaphor for the unknowable immensity, the sea represents all realms of horror, hope and possibility. It occupies a central place in our notion of our own mortality.
I have chosen to use the 19th-century medium of ambrotype for the timeless quality that it brings to this immortal subject.
