2017 Finalists

Lisa TOMASETTI

Artist statement: This image is part of a series Happy after ever which explores the notions of impermanence and turbulence caused by the impact of the digital in photography’s new realm. Earlier this year I travelled to Iceland with my daughter to shoot this work and was interested in placing the figure in an inhospitable, fragile environment to contemplate whether contemporary photography’s digital expression risks its legacy as lasting cultural artefact. In a current world where quantity seems the enemy of quality and the record of history is at stake, I question whether the ubiquity of photography has threatened its authority as art.
