Online collection information
MGA holds a collection of almost 3400 Australian photographic works. Our growing collection aims to provide a cogent and refined account of Australian photographic practices from the perspective of an art museum. As a result of our efforts to date, MGA is the only cultural institution in the country whose collection is focussed solely on Australian photography.
Explore our collection is an online resource started in September 2013 that provides digital access to the collection. Currently over 30% of the collection is available online with many records including extended texts and artist biographies to create an excellent resource of Australian photographers and photographs for researchers, students, and the general public.
Please explore our collection by using the filters shown to the left. You can explore by selecting artist's names, date of creation, photographic print type or by keyword. Below these filtering options is a new initiative introduced in 2018, that groups works by exhibition or acquisition groups to further assist enhanced navigation and exploration through the online collection.
MGA acknowledges and pays our respect to the Traditional Owners, and Elders past, present and future, of the lands and waters on which we live and work. We acknowledge Aboriginal connection to material and creative practice on these lands for more than 60 000 years, and celebrate their enduring presence and knowledge.
Access to the MGA Collection works in person for study purposes is made available on an individual request basis. Requests for collection access can be made by completing the following form: REQUEST FOR COLLECTION ACCESS FORM
