Hoda Afshar (1983– ) is a Melbourne based artist born in Tehran, Iran. She completed a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art – Photography in Tehran and holds a PhD in Creative Arts from Curtin University. She is a Lecturer at Photography Studies College, Melbourne. Afshar is an MGA Collection artist and 2018 Bowness Photography Prize winner.
Afshar began her career as an artist in 2005 and was selected in 2006 as one of the top ten young documentary photographers in Iran by World Press Photo to attend their educational training program. Since moving to Australia in 2007 her work has been widely exhibited both locally and internationally and published online and in print. Her photographic practice pushes boundaries between conceptual, staged and documentary photography, and often reflects on issues related to representation, displacement, gender and identity politics.
Afshar has been shortlisted for many prestigious art awards. She was winner of the 2015 National Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery, Australia. In 2018 Afshar won the Bowness Photography Prize and the Sotheby’s People’s Choice Award with a portrait of Behrouz Boochani.
